What your cat actually dreams about.
Cats sleep an average of 16 hours a day, and during these moments, they definitely dream. They twitch their paws and tail, flutter in their sleep, and sometimes wake up suddenly, as if startled by a nightmare.
Scientists have discovered what our feline companions dream about.
“Cats, like most other mammals, dream,” says Kelly St. Denis, DVM, the current president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. “Studies of the electrical brain patterns of sleeping cats compared to performing routine tasks while awake show striking similarities. So, it can be rather disconcerting to conclude that our cats dream the same way we do—reliving past experiences in their dreams.”
Similar to humans and rats, cats also dream about their everyday activities.
“Cats are hunters,” says Dr. Verna Serra, a doctor of veterinary medicine at the Veterinary Emergency Group. “So, most likely, they dream most often about the hunting process. And also about their favorite toys, tasty food, how they sharpen their claws on the couch, or how we pet them. Most likely, they dream about various things, just like we do.”
If your cat makes sounds or twitches its paws while dreaming, don’t be alarmed. Just like humans, cats experience most of their vivid dreams during the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep. It is during these moments that a cat may move, meow, or twitch its paws. It simply means that your cat is immersed in a dream, and everything is normal.
And, of course, the good news is that you also appear in your cat’s dreams.
