Angry, playful, or surprised: Determining your cat’s mood by its tail.

Simple and practical life hacks to understand that your cat loves you.

Probably every cat owner has tried at least once to determine their pet’s mood by the expression on its face. With cats, it’s easy to do – just take a look at the position of their tail.

Angry, playful, or surprised – these and several other emotions and moods of your four-legged friend can be easily determined by paying attention to the position of their tail. After all, it is a true indicator.

Tail down.

If you notice that your furry friend’s tail is down and they are carefully examining something, it’s a signal that the cat doesn’t want to be bothered. The animal is exploring something that has caught its interest, so it’s better not to disturb.

Tail tip twitching.

You may have noticed that sometimes when looking at or interacting with you, your cat’s tail tip twitches. What does it mean? In the language of cats, it’s a display of friendliness. Your pet is in a good mood and happy about your presence or attention.

Cat’s tail held high.

This indicates a stronger emotion. If your striped companion walks around with its tail held high, it means everything is fine with the cat. It’s an indicator of happiness and enjoying life. The conditions, food, playtime, and even the person themselves – everything suits the animal.

Tucked tail.

But what if the situation is the opposite and the tail is tucked or hidden between the hind legs? It indicates negativity. Perhaps the cat has been frightened by something and is clearly feeling stressed. It might be upset with its owner or another pet and is expressing its dissatisfaction with the situation.

Sudden tail twitching or strikes with it.

It’s a clear warning to both the owner and any other animals around. By striking the floor or twitching its tail sharply, the cat shows its irritated state. It’s a signal to better not touch it now. Leave the pet alone for a while and let it calm down.

Raised fur.

If you ignore the advice from the previous point about tail twitching, you may notice that the cat’s fur is standing on end. It’s a clear sign of anger from the pet, indicating that the cat is ready to attack. Be prepared to break up a fight between two whiskered ones or to run away from a cat that has targeted you as its prey.
