Why do cats often get “stuck” in trees and how can you help them?

Why is it much harder for cats to come down than to climb up?

Cats are known for their grace, agility, and athleticism. However, there is one physical feat that many cats struggle with – coming down after they have climbed up a tree. Why do cats get stuck in trees?

Why do cats climb trees?

Cats are an interesting species in terms of behavior, as they can be predators to small creatures and yet vulnerable to larger animals. According to scientists, cats can climb trees because they are capable of doing so, and they find it enjoyable. However, they may also climb trees in pursuit of their prey without realizing the predicament they’ve gotten themselves into. Cats are also prone to climbing high when they sense a threat. So if a cat feels that its life is in danger, it will most likely climb a tree where it can find a safe vantage point.

Why do they get “stuck”?

Cats find it very easy to climb trees as their claws are the perfect tool for propelling them upwards. However, once they are at a height, descending becomes much more challenging than ascending. A cat on a tree may experience difficulties in coordinating its hind and front paws when attempting to come down. It is simply not the usual motion that cats perform. Most cats prefer to jump from a height rather than descend. When cats climb trees, they often go too high to jump down, and that’s why they get stuck. Additionally, some cats may be too frightened to jump down, especially if something has driven them up the tree or they are not accustomed to being outdoors.

What to do if a cat gets stuck in a tree?

Although old cartoons and TV shows often depict hysterical cat owners who call firefighters when their cat gets stuck in a tree, such a reaction is greatly exaggerated. Stay calm and relaxed, as you don’t want to further agitate the cat.

Cats often come down on their own, considering the time and space. Perhaps the cat simply needs space, silence, and the assurance that there are no other animals or people nearby who could disturb it.

Lure her with food.

Some cats that are “stuck” simply don’t want to come down due to fear or other cat-related reasons. Experts recommend placing a bit of their favorite cat food, which can tempt your cat to come down. By slightly warming up the wet food, you’ll enhance the aroma and usually be able to persuade the cat to come down from the tree more quickly.

You can try climbing up after her.

But only if you are physically able to climb after the cat! And never do it without a valid reason.

Tips.

If none of these methods work, call your local animal rescue organization or animal shelter. They may have additional advice or they may know professional climbers who can rescue the cat.

Build a cat ladder that doesn’t have any openings where the cat could fall through. Connect as many steps as needed to reach the desired height.

Avoid calling the fire department to come and rescue the cat from the tree. Most departments won’t perform such tasks as they need to prioritize emergencies involving humans.
