One of the most common problems that pet owners face.
Very often, veterinarians hear complaints from owners that their cat does not drink water. Cats do drink less water than dogs. However, completely refusing water is certainly not possible.
If the water in the bowl does not decrease, it means you need to observe your pet.
Unusual drinking spots.
Most likely, your pet has found an alternative drinking spot. It could be running water from the tap, water intended for watering plants. Many cats enjoy drinking water from a bowl placed in the sink or at the bottom of the bathtub. And there are some less pleasant preferences, such as water from the toilet.
When more water is needed.
Usually, if a cat’s diet consists mainly of dry food, the consumption of liquid by the animal increases and becomes obvious to the owner. However, if your furry friend receives a large amount of wet food or is fed with natural products, you may not notice when and how the cat drinks. The cat’s activity level throughout the day also affects water consumption. The more active the cat, the more it will drink.
What to do when they don’t drink?
Low water consumption in cats contributes to urine concentration and can lead to the development of urinary tract disease. To increase your cat’s interest in drinking, it is recommended to change the water in the bowl as often as possible, place several different-shaped and sized containers throughout the house, and use specialized drinking fountains.
If that doesn’t help, consult with a veterinarian. It may be necessary to supplement your cat’s hydration. This can be done easily by filling a regular 5-10 ml syringe with water and gently administering it into the cat’s mouth.
